My Public Display of Dieting – Week 42

RESULTS: Gained 2 pounds for a total loss of 26 pounds

My first trip to Rita’s for a frozen custard cookie sandwich. WOW! I will definitely miss this place! But my diet will go better without it! LOL!

At this point, it’s just a matter of “keep on trying, don’t give up.” I’ve gained back a total of 5 pounds from my lowest point a few months ago. That’s not good. But if I’d given up and stopped trying, it would be far worse.

The biggest problem has been stress from moving and other related struggles, and now we’re moving again so we’re having goodbye lunches and dinners. Plus, we’re saying, Oh, let’s eat this and that because we won’t have it in New Zealand.

(Did you hear? We’re moving to New Zealand in less than a month! John was hired at his dream job, Weta Digital!)

So, yes, I bought one more box of Cap’n Crunch Peanut Butter cereal and one more box of Pop Tarts. John actually picked my favorite flavor (brown sugar cinnamon) instead of his (probably chocolate fudge) – isn’t he sweet? In fact, I had a bowl of Cap’n Crunch just a few minutes ago – yum!

Mmm, soooo good!

And even though my running has been almost non-existent because of all the errands I’ve had to run buying boxes, taking things to the thrift store, and a million other things, I’m determined to run tomorrow morning. (You heard it here first! Check Facebook to see if I managed it. I sure hope so!)

With a blog, it’s usually quite difficult to tell if anyone is really reading what you write, and if it makes any impact at all on the world. But I’ve heard in a few comments here, and in a few comments when I see friends in person, that you guys do find something good or useful in my blogs. So long as I keep thinking that’s true, I’ll keep writing. 🙂

I was also told by two different people that posting my struggles and failures and comebacks is encouraging, too. So here’s to a comeback next week! For all of us! 🙂 Love you guys!

My Public Display of Dieting – Week 41

RESULTS: Lost 0 pounds for a total loss of 28 pounds

Hand pushing the restart buttonYes, this blog is really late! It’s almost time for the week 42 update. But at least it gave me a couple extra days to lose that extra vacation weight! Haha!

So as of Wednesday of this week, I was back down to 170, having lost the 3-5 pounds I’d gained. Whew! Now I have to get back on the exercise wagon and hit the Restart button. I’ll tell you on Sunday, in my Chubby Girls Run column, what’s going on and how things are about to change. 🙂

Meanwhile, one thing I’ve really noticed lately is that things I used to think tasted great, or things that sound like they should taste great, don’t really taste that great. I ate an Entenmann’s apple cider donut this morning with apple cider. (It’s fall! Of course I have to have apple cider and donuts!) But let me just say that it tasted more like a donut-shaped sugar bar with a touch of apple-cinnamon flavor. Big disappointment. 🙁 I guess the upside is that I won’t be eating any more of them.

Also, the more protein I eat, the less I have sugar cravings. So now that most of our junk food is gone, I’m getting back to eating more protein and not wanting the junk food. Again – whew! There was a point a few days ago when I was afraid I’d rewired my body chemistry back to the out-of-control way of overeating I’d gotten caught up in the last few years. Yikes!

Oh, one more thing that might be just a way for me to keep track rather than terribly interesting to you. I’ve started having headaches again, a lot of them. I don’t know if it’s the new apartment, the new town, an extra dose of stress, the extra sugar and junk food, the two weeks without taking probiotics because they were on order, or – probably – a combination of several of these things. But as of today, back on probiotics, cutting way back on sugar and junk food, and let’s see how that affects the headaches.

See you again in a few days! 🙂

Me in a swimsuit Oct 6 – first time I’d gotten into this suit in four years!

I’ve been on vacation this past week. I can’t remember the last time John and I were on a real vacation. I can’t remember the last time I felt so relaxed and carefree. It was wonderful! (It took a few days to get to that point, but it was awesome!)

And since we’d originally picked this date months ago because it coincided with John’s birthday, there was a lot of eating from day one! 😀 We had cake and ice cream and a million snacks the first day when a few friends came over to surprise John for his birthday. Then we went to the grocery store and found some great items in the Manager’s Meat Specials section and John made an amazing steak and potatoes and blackened green beans meal on Monday.

We had a gazillion different breakfast pastries, chocolate chip blueberry pancakes, eggs and maple bacon, eggs and breakfast steak, hashbrown-stuffed hamburgers, gallons of soda pop, wine and hard cider and whiskey (one of John’s birthday presents), and a half dozen treats we picked up at Costco before we got to the resort.

And that doesn’t include all the things we ate but forgot about!! 😀

It was a super fun week for a dozen reasons, and we really enjoyed it. Our shorts definitely felt tighter on the return trip home, but it was worth it. As of today, we are both back on the wagon. Very little sugar or alcohol, very little bread, very few calories in general! Haha!

So next week, after I get rid of whatever I gained this past week, I’ll get on the scale again and keep working at my goal of losing 50 pounds in 50 weeks. Since I’m about 10-ish pounds behind, I’ll almost certainly have to extend my time frame for my 50-pound goal, but I’ll keep going till I hit it. Yay!

My Public Display of Dieting – Week 39

Smiley face with thumb upRESULTS: Lost 0 pounds for a total loss of 28 pounds

Last week, one of my friends commented that I need to stop focusing on what I haven’t done (lose 39 pounds in 39 weeks), and instead focus on what I have done.

Thanks for the reminder, CG. 😀

This week we’ll be celebrating John’s birthday, so there will be cake, ice cream, pizza, In N Out burgers and fries, peanut butter-filled pretzels, chocolate-covered almonds, and so much more. I hope to get at least one run along the beach, but at this point I’ll just be glad to enjoy life, enjoy health, and renew my goal next week to lose 50 pounds.

I hope you have a great week! 😀

My Public Display of Dieting – Week 38

RESULTS: Gained back 1 pound for a total loss of 28 pounds

OuchLike yesterday’s post about my running, this one about my dieting is just depressing. I used the “Ouch” image for both because I don’t have an unhappy smiley face. This past week, I’ve barely even tried. I want to drown my troubles in sugar-filled cookies and chocolate-covered almonds and Wild Cherry Pepsi and margaritas. And yet – of course – when I try, it only makes me feel worse.

I’m ten pounds and ten weeks – two and a half months – behind my goal. The cause of my weight gain is the same as the result: a dispiritedness that I can’t seem to shake.

The one thing that keeps me going is the fact that I promised to blog about my journey for the fifty weeks. I credit this with keeping me from gaining back ten pounds rather than three. And at this point, I’ll take all the small favors I can find.

My Public Display of Dieting – Week 37

RESULTS: Lost 1 pound (of 3 gained) for a total loss of 29 pounds

Found a church close enough to walk to!

Found a church close enough to walk to! Only 2 miles!

In a perfect world, that would say, TOTAL LOSS OF 37 POUNDS above. But it’s not a perfect world and I am far from a perfect person. 🙂 My stress eating has lessened, but now my mind and body has gotten back into some bad habits, so I’m trying to get myself to want to eat healthier.

(Let me just say that the sweet potato tortilla chips from Trader Joe’s dipped into the Lay’s Ranch Dip are awesome!!)

So in last week’s entry, I wrote that I probably gained a couple pounds. After finding my scale, I’m guessing I probably gained 3 pounds, or else there’s a difference between the other scale I was using and ours. In any case, since I found our digital scale, I lost one of the gained pounds, so that’s good.

But I’ve got to find a way to get back to eating healthier. I’ve gone over calories 5-7 days out of 7 the last few weeks. I’m 8 pounds, and therefore, as many as 8 or more weeks behind. But…I told myself yesterday that I wouldn’t quit until I got to 50 pounds, even if it turns out to be in  55 or 60 or more weeks.

My Public Display of Dieting – Week 36

RESULTS: Unknown – probably gained a couple pounds

OuchJust when I think life may stop throwing punches, I get a roundhouse kick in the gut. And what happens? After too many hits, I begin to revert to my former stress-eating behaviors. 🙁

I’ve done a ton of overeating this past week. Additionally, I can’t find my bathroom scale in all the boxes I’ve unpacked. I still have about three-quarters of the boxes left to unpack, so I’m sure I’ll find it at some point. But I have no idea how much I weigh.

Which may be just as well. Until I find the scale, I can regroup and refocus on eating less and eating healthier. I absolutely hate that I’m getting so behind in my work, especially in the classes I’m teaching, but all of this physical labor in unpacking and setting up our apartment is at least helping me burn a few more calories.

We went to a wedding Sunday, so I’d decided on Friday I would hit the Restart button today, Monday. It was another tough day, and I ate a lot of things I shouldn’t have. So imagine my surprise when I found that I’d only gone 50 calories over my limit! It actually encouraged me to work hard again tomorrow. Thank you, God. I needed some encouragement.

I’ve been having a lot of how am I going to get through this? days. I’ve overeaten, and I’ve eaten sweets and chips and stuff I shouldn’t while I’m trying to lose weight. But at least I haven’t given up. I’m behind. I may not reach my 50-pound weight loss goal in 50 weeks, but I’m going to keep going and keep trying.

If you’re struggling, hit the Restart button with me. We can keep going, one tiny step at a time, together.

My Public Display of Dieting – Week 35

RESULTS: Lost 0 pounds for a total loss of 31 pounds

Bathroom scaleWhen I weighed myself this weekend, I hadn’t lost any weight, but I hadn’t gained any weight – which, under the circumstances, I considered a win.

It’s been a stressful few weeks. We just moved about 40 miles closer to John’s work, among many other stressful things. There is a lot of extra exercise involved in moving, sure, but also a lot more junk food and stress eating. (Delicious yummy junk food like pizza and chips and dip and soda!)

I’m still unpacking, and I haven’t found my scale yet. But when I do, I’m not sure how to compare it to the last 35 weeks since it’s not only a different scale, but it’s digital instead of analog/mechanical. Plus, I had a really, really bad day yesterday and ate three-quarters of a bag of kettle potato chips in a sitting. Yikes.

All that to say…I’m a month behind my goal of a pound a week for 50 weeks, I’m dealing with some really tough stressors in really defeating ways, I haven’t run in a week…but I’m still going, still working it, still getting rid of clothes that are too big. 🙂

So…that’s all I’ve got…just putting one foot in front of the other, one step at a time. If you’re doing the same, hang in there! Somehow, we’ll make it through this tough period together.

My Public Display of Dieting – Week 34

RESULTS: Lost 1 pound for a total loss of 31 pounds!

31 pounds lostAfter an awful lot of stress eating and lack of exercise this week, I didn’t think I’d done enough to keep my calorie count low enough to lose any weight. So imagine my surprise when I got on the scale and I was down a pound!

MyFitnessPal rewarded me with this lovely little celebratory badge. It makes me feel like I can keep on going.

Of course, you win some, you lose some. Or, in this case, you lose some, you lose some. Now that I’ve lost yet another pound on my 50-pound journey, MyFitnessPal took away another 40 calories from my daily intake. What are they thinking?? How am I supposed to stress eat with fewer calories??

I was a little worried that I’m losing muscle instead of fat since my exercise has decreased lately. But two days ago, I pulled a pair of shorts down over my hips to my ankles – while they were still zipped and buttoned! I guess that’s another pair for the donation bag. 🙂

My Public Display of Dieting – Week 33

RESULTS: Lost 0 pounds for a total loss of 30 pounds

I don’t know what it was this past weekend, but I really fell off the wagon! Friday night I was so tired, by the time I sat down in front of the TV about seven o’clock, I just wanted to munch on something. I ate half a dozen celery sticks, but covered in cream cheese. Then I went and microwaved one of those mini bags of kettle corn popcorn. I knew my desire for food was all in my head (tired and stressed) when none of that took the edge off. But at least I stopped eating.

My full plate at a potluckSaturday I was supposed to get up and go for a run before my RWA meeting in San Diego, but I was exhausted and decided to sleep instead. Without the run, I’d really have to be careful with the calorie count because our meeting was a potluck! Well, I looked over everything before I took a plate (that helps me choose beforehand, which helps me not to overeat so much), but I still ended up with a full days’ worth of calories in that one meal! (That is a homemade bratwurst there! And boy, do I wish I knew where those taquitos came from!)

The amazingly delicious food on this plate is about 700-800 calories – and worth every bite! Then I ate several fabulous desserts and two cups of yummy pomegranate juice. My daily calorie limit to lose one pound a week is currently 1510. (It keeps dropping as I lose weight, darn it.) The calories I ate just at the potluck were over 1600!

And THEN John came home and I made the most delicious guacamole, and John made his trademark fabulous margaritas, and…well, suffice it to say that Saturday’s total calories should’ve lasted me two days. Then Sunday I was just, like, screw it, I’m going to finish enjoying the weekend and start again on Monday.

On the one hand, I feel bad that I overdid it so badly. On the other hand, Saturday and Sunday’s food was absolutely delicious! John made a grilled cheese sandwich for dinner Sunday with mushrooms, bacon, avocado, and tomato. The sandwich alone was nearly 800 calories! LOL! But it was amazing! (He grilled one side of the bread in the bacon grease – oh my gosh!)

One of my friends called it a spontaneous diet vacation – LOL!!!! I love it! So that was my weekend. Monday, I went out and ran, and I ate “normally” and on track. So the fact that I got on the scale this morning and weighed the same as last week, well, I’m just grateful! (Especially since, technically, I’m three pounds behind my goal.)

Anyway, new day, new choices. We can only keep moving one step at a time, right? But at least we’re moving. 🙂
